    I'm stuck on this issue.

    I'm trying upgrade an instance of modx 2.2.06 to 2.3.1

    FATAL ERROR: MODX Setup cannot continue.
    Make sure your PHP session configuration is valid and working.

    This server on hostmonster. See server info here.
    http://tbdsandbox.com/phpinfo.php

    I use this for testing and trying out new stuff like upgrading to 2.3.1. There are several instances of Modx installed. The instance I was trying to upgrade is in the tbd folder.

    I read through several other entries on this topic but most were fairly old and I didn't see any dealing with 2.3.1 upgrades.

    There is mention of tmp folders not being available or writable. There is a tmp folder in the root of the server but I'm told by hostmonster tech support that I don't have write permissions to that folder and that I'd have to reassign session info to another folder. But he couldn't tell me how to do that.

    I'm also not sure if there should be a tmp folder in the folder where the instance of modx is installed. I did create a folder there with (777) but nothing has been written to it. I don't know if this is really the issue.

    I honestly don't know how to deal with this. I could use some help with this.

    Thanks

    Terry

      You can reassign the php session save path using a php.ini file with the contents:

      sessions.save_path = "/path/to/your/folder"

        You might also want to try 755 for the folder permission. On many hosts, 777 won't work.

          So I'm back in my office now (I was working remotely on this). I haven't changed anything since I tried this install over the weekend, except my computer and location, and now the install works perfectly fine. Upgrade is complete.

          The tmp folder that I added has nothing in it. The tmp file in the server root does not have any file that has been updated since before I started this yesterday.

          Based on all this, I'm guessing this was also not a problem related to writing session data to a tmp file.

          I had deleted the cache manually on the server and cleared cache and cookies in my browser. The host tech support could see the errors too so I'm assuming that it was not something in the browser's local cache.

          I have a bunch of these upgrades to do for clients. I was hoping to understand this so I wouldn't have this problem again on a client site. I guess I'll have to try one and hope for the best.

          Thanks for you help all.

            Hi,
            I just ran into the same kind of problem. When I read this
            I haven't changed anything since I tried this install over the weekend, except my computer and location,
            I did something to me definitly not logical, but it worked:

            I changed the browser!

            While I usually just work with chrome, I tried firefox and thats it. While Chrome still shows me this:

            Warning: session_start(): open(/tmp/sess_e4e5........86, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in /www/htdocs/...........setup/index.php on line 33

            Warning: session_start(): Cannot send session cache limiter - headers already sent (output started at /www/htdocs............./setup/index.php:33) in /www/htdocs/......................setup/index.php on line 33
