Dedicated Server. Linux. Plesk 12.
I have a site with 2.2.14 on. Everything works OK. I clear cache. Flush.
I copy the .zip file to root. Then I transfer the 2.3.1 extracted files and directories from the new extracted folder to root. I check the option at Plesk windows to replace files with the same name.
I run setup. I get some errors* and update is finishing with success (?). During installation the Modx version at the top right shows 2.2.14. The interface is from 2.3.1 though.
After the completion of the installation the manager is still the old one. 2.2.14.
I am suspecting that the problem is when I copy the files using the plesk file manager.
Any suggestion?

Strange. I am thinking one of two things, the core is the wrong location (check the core.config.php file in the root of your site to see what is set as the core location. Also check the ownership of the files to see if perhaps you're running in a setup that does not provide the authority to overwrite the old files.
When you unzip on the server, the usual default behavior is to unzip all the files into a subdirectory named for the MODX version. If that's what happened, MODX would ignore them. You can move the contents of that directory to the root, or:
I usually unzip them locally, go into that directory, and create a new .zip file. Then upload and unzip that on the server, being careful to set the target to the MODX root directory.
AFAIK, cPanel is free at all of the sites listed here. 30 Euro/month seems like an outrageous price to me.

It's probably a VPS or dedicated server. Those usually don't come with CPanel, and there is usually an option to purchase it if you want it on your server.

I have never had any problems upgrading using the install.php script, it downloads, uncompresses and moves the files automatically.

That's not a cPanel VPS license, or your provider is making a heck of a profit on that license. That being said the cost of a license is sometimes cheaper than the cost of going without a license.
