There are many ways to skin a cat and I am looking for some best practices with regards to the correct setup and configuration for a filterable portfolio similar to the example here: http://www.shindiristudio.com/dvsn-html/portfolio-3c.html

I would appreciate anyone who has done this with MODx and can provide some direction. It would surly help others too.

There are two ways I usually do this, if your projects only need one tag each and are arranged in parent containers, use the container alias as a filter tag. If you need multiple filter tags for each project page, use an addon like Tagger. Usually the filter tags are placed in divs, and multiple word tags with spaces can mess them up, so again use the tag alias rather than the name to populate the divs.

Tagger is incredibly powerful for this. Has a highly configurable UI in the Manager for non-tech users to manage tags...let me know if you need help with installing it.

Tagger looks awesome, I am starting to play with it now.

Something I am wondering for the broad portfolio views is how I should set things up to show a number of the key tags (tags from "primary resources") while showing only a limited number of items in the portfolio.

For example, if I have PrimaryTag1, PrimaryTag2, PrimaryTag3, PrimaryTag4 and each has say between 5 and 7 resources each. I would like to limit my display to three rows of three item randomly, but when a visitor clicks on the filter for PrimaryTag4 they will see the coordinating 7 portfolio items only?

The site you referenced is using http://isotope.metafizzy.co/ for the animated filter. I've used this in conjunction with tagger and getresources or migx to populate the page.

MIGX is foreign to me. I had hoped to keep it as simple as possible - one day I will need to step across to MIGX but this is not the right project. The portfolio is a finishing touch that I need to complete ASAP. I have another project I would like to re-do using MIGX when time permits.

No need to use MIGX, getResources does the job.

Terry, do you know of a good way to limit display to only a certain number of resources at a time while still being able to live-sort a larger number per my previous description?

My initial thought would be to assign a tag for those you want displayed initially, then set the isotope filter to display that tag when the page loads.

Ah... So perhaps a #Initial or #Highlighted then show the sortable tags for everything else? Very smart! Thank you.
