    Hello,

I try to make website (software portal) with modx support. I use FURL option and everythings works fine.

My question: when google indexes link for program in my website, e.g. ProgDVB 5.16.0 Standard

    http://pcpedia.pl/ProgDVB-5.16.0-Standard.html

Everythings works ok but it doesn’t work when I try to update version e.g. to
5.17.0 and after alias change to ProgDVB 5.17.0 Standard

How can I redirect the link clicking on http://pcpedia.pl/ProgDVB-5.16.0-Standard.html to the new version http://pcpedia.pl/ProgDVB-5.17.0-Standard.html?

Is it possible to do it via (using) modx?

    Thanks for suggestion

This can be done in MODx using a plug in (Strict SEO?) but I have no experience with it as of yet, so I can’t really advise you specifically on that.

But, I think it could be a good and useful idea to create URLs that do not contain version numbers, eg: /ProgDVB-Standard.html

and then use the phrase including the version number "ProgDVB 5.16.0 Standard" in both the <title> and <h1> tags.

That way you don’t have to do constant 301 redirecting with new version numbers, but you will still get SEO benefits presuming you are hoping to target exact phrases (I am guessing that this is behind your logic of including the version number in the URL).

          Thanks guys!

I like your idea, I think this is good at this moment. I understand I should put it into <title>, but what do you mean by <h1> tag? Could you explain this topic/idea?

          @tkfm

I think this snippet can be used to only redirect from old URLs, not from existing now.
Quote from this snippet: "This is not good for existing links to the site or search engines."

I mean that the heading or title of the page, in the main content section itself, should be in a <h1> tag.

If you think of content on a webpage as having a hierarchy of importance, you need to mark it up accordingly. Search engines use this hierarchy to assess and ultimately rank your pages (many other factors, but lets start here with on-page optimization).

So, make sure you have your keywords in some way represented in <h> tags on your page - <h1> being markup for the main title of a page, it is "stronger" and thus a good bet to help match your page to relevant searches for the product (very simplified explanation).
