Some people like to use checkboxes to add snippets to a document, that seems to be an effective method. There is a tutorial in the wiki that describes using checkboxes to build the sidebar like this. Also you can use PHx to handle the logic and display the snippet or chunk if the conditions are set.
There is a snippet called TVConditional that does a simple logic based on the value of a template variable.
