ok so i’ve got sections on my site and i want different managers to change different parts of the site. i’ve looked everywhere for a solution but this question doesn’t seem to be answered anywhere, people are more concerned with hiding stuff from other users but not what the end user sees.

whenever i make a document group for certain managers to edit sections of the site, it makes the pages not public, how can i make a document group public so that visitors on the site see all the content but those who edit it only edit the bits they are allowed to.

    please help me out...

i have two main admins that can edit everything. then i want a section manager who can only edit one section of the site. but i want the public to see all of this online without having to log in. anyone?

You can set up independent manager document groups and assign them to each section. Although the document shows as "private" it is only private in the manager users. What determines the behavior is if the document group is assigned to a manager user group.

So even though the Public option is not selected, when you assign a document to a manager document group it is only private to managers. Now if there is a web user group assigned to the same document group it will also become private to web users.

An independent manager / web document group assignment system would be more intuitive.

man that’s confusing... i don’t understand what i’m doing wrong. i’ve set up a document group called "performing arts", i’ve set up a manager group called "section manager" and i’ve ticked the performing arts page as performing arts doc group. then i’ve made a manager called jim and ticked him to be a "section manager".

now when i log in to manager as jim for some reason he can still edit anything he wants not just performing arts. and when i visit the website not logged in the performing arts section isn’t even there, and when i log in as admin and view the website the performing arts section again isn’t there but it is in the manager...

i need the public to be able to see all sections and pages regardless of who edits them but only want certain managers editing certain sections...

this is the crazy... can anyone please break it down easier for me, i’m stupid!

where did you create the doc group in web permissions by mistake? you need to create usergroups and document groups for the manager in manager permissions.
first create a documentgroup for the admin, then set all pages to that documentgroup, then create a usergroup AND documentgroup for performingarts and link those to togetter.

create a user and put him/her in the usergroup of performingarts.
now select the document you want to give acces to and edit the page go down in that page and select the documentgroup for performingarts.
now your new user is able to edit those pages and nothing else (the rest is only for the admin)

so make sure that you did not create any webgroups and web doc groups that you could confuse yorself with, I alway name my groups clear like MUgroup1 and MDgroup1 and for web WUgroup1 and WDgroup1

          hope this helps you

@pastimages: the problem you are having is that the manager is seeing all the private files as well as all the public files. In order to limit the manager to only edit the assigned files then you need to take all the files out of public. This is the confusing part, since the public in this sense only refers to the manager users and not to the web users. I have always thought that an isolated web/manager group selection would be more clear to understand.

Assign all the documents to a manager group to take them out of public (manager) mode.

Don’t despair, this is really confusing to me as well. I think it is a result of there only being manager groups originally. grin
