It would certainly be nice to have an internal link-checker. But there’s tons of tools/sites already out there which do their job nicely. Here’s a Firefox-extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/532
Here’s a free Windows app that will apparently check your entire site for broken links: http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html
edit: I just tried the Xenu app... it’s wonderful. Generates a nice report for an entire site in seconds. Also highly configurable.
I’ve thought about doing a link checker for MODx. I don’t think it would be all that hard to just take the code from a site map generator, parse out the http: links and check them, then generate a report. The trouble is, as other have mentioned, it puts the whole load of doing it on the site’s server and PHP isn’t the greatest tool for doing it.
Using something like Xenu hardly taxes the site at all since you’re mainly using the resources of the computer that’s running Xenu (not to mention that all the coding has been done for you already). And writing PHP code to create a good-looking report isn’t my idea of fun.
IMO, the only really good reason for doing it is to boost the marketing potential for MODx.
