I have the add-on installed and working nicely. I am using the following:

    [[!modMailchimp? &listId=`listID` &mergeTags=`FNAME,LNAME,EMAIL,MMERGE3` ]]

How do I get the form to return a friendly success or error message? I've read through the documentation and it's not clear to me. For instance, when a required field is not filled in, I get:

"250 FNAME must be provided - Please enter a value"

On a successful subscription, I get:

"Lexicon said: Thanks! Please check your email to confirm your subscription."

How do I capture those messages and translate them into something friendlier?

You need to edit them in the lexicon settings. Select the modMailChimp namespace.

I've gone through the entire core/lexicon/en directory and can't find the translations for modMailChimp. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I was looking in the wrong place. The lexicon settings are found under the Settings icon in the Admin dashboard. Also, the modMailChimp lexicon is found in the core/components directory. I find that I can edit in either place.

However, I am at a loss as to how to *add* a message. The standard ones are all there and editable but for instance the "250 FNAME must be provided - Please enter a value" message, how do I add that to the lexicon? I did try a few things but no success.

If you want to stop the error codes displaying, remove [[+errorCode]] from the mmc_subscribe chunk.

I want to display them but in a more friendly manner. Instead of FNAME, I just want it to say "First name".

I tried adding "modmailchimp.FNAME_missing" to the lexicon but that didn't work.

The error is returned from Mailchimp includes the field name (not label) as specified in your list. As far as I'm aware the extra does not parse those. You'd have to mod the snippet. Easier would be to stick some javascript validation on your form.
