makes sure the names have no spaces or special characters, KCFinder chokes on them.

This might not be your issue, but I have just been upgrading some sites where we had added the KCFinder as a plugin manually on a version 1.0.8
After upgrading KCFinder was not working as you describe until we deleted the plugin (because it is baked into Evo now, so I guess there was some conflict somewhere.
After deleting the KCFinder plug in then it worked.
