Get the install.php script from here https://github.com/evolution-cms/installer

Put the install.php file in your site root, and run it from your browser - domain.com/install.php

It will offer you various choices, select the one you want and click Install. It will download the zip file, extract it in place, then forward you to the MODX install application. Select the "upgrade" option.

Thank you, Sottwell! I followed these steps and got to the attached screenshot with the highlighted error message. So I was not able to install anything yet. Any suggestions?

You'll have to do it the hard way then.

Get the zip file from modx.com/downloads

Use your domain's control panel (CPanel?) to upload the zip file, unzip it, and move the directories and files into place.

Then run the install script (domain.com/install) in upgrade mode.

You did back up your site first, didn't you?

Oh bummer. Is it possible to have my hosting company change something on the server so I can use the installer? I just generated a full backup and saved it on my computer.

Like the message says, allow_url_fopen has to be enabled in your PHP configuration.
