    Hello, world! smiley

Just today I've got in on the administration's MODX v.0.9.6.1b - year 2008!
And I have never used MODX before.

After short-term hysteria I've read the documentation and understood that upgrade to the current version will not be easy.
    Hence, the main question:
    1) What is easier(and better): to update OR demolish current and insltall brend new latest version?

    And additional questions:
    2) What should I pay attentionin the first place when installing / upgrading CMS? What are weaknesses, and what will work without too much interference?
    3) How painful / painless may be transition on a different CMS? What engines are closest in spirit and structure to MODX?
    4) If you have been using the system for long - please vote for ease of administration on a scale of 1 to 10.

    Thanks in advance!

PS. I've just created same question in Russian thread, but it seems there are not so many people in there, so I apologize if written in the wrong section, please move to the right.

What plugins / snippets do you use? What kind of site is it (forum or just some ditto stuff?)

Updating isn't hard, just backup the files and the database, if you are lucky you can be done in 1 hour.
If something/plugin/snippet isn't working we can help you out. You can always go back to your backup (if you know how to use phpmyadmin).

      Closest to Evolution is Revolution.

You really need to upgrade smiley

It's a corporate site - just several static pages, image gallery and news feed. All sites were like this in 2008.

There's not so many snippets really - 10 or something, but I guess they need an updrade too. Most of them are ver.0.x and 1.x (six years, oh my god, how much windows system did we have since!!!!)

Question is - how did Evolution and Revolution DB differs from 0.9.6, and other differences in file system, structure and so on. Who want to edit every table or file list!

I'm going to read manuals on weekend and then start with update, but right now I'm agree even on Wordpress, really)

          Evo 1.0.14 isn't that bad.
Did you use Maxi gallery? I don't know anything about that, I always use Evogallery.
You might want to duplicate some snippets if you changed them back in 2008.

Or build a copy on a subdomain and upgrade it from there.

If I recall correctly, about the only serious problem I had upgrading ancient Evo sites to a newer version of Evo was in some of the snippets. Their properties (options or parameters) had changed over the years. Some were good enough to output messages explaining what needed to be done, like AjaxSearch. Others just obviously weren't working correctly and I had to check the snippet calls and make sure they used up-to-date properties.

Another way to handle this is to take care to NOT overwrite the assets/snippets/ folder, and in the installation process make sure that the snippets were not selected for update. Then at leisure update one snippet at a time manually. After doing this a few times, though, I found that I rarely had more than one or two snippets that needed adjustment, so it was better to just go ahead and upgrade everything and fix the ones that needed fixing.

              I see... Thanks, sottwell!

What about other CMS? Could anyone compare this to some others?
I work with Quickview, Wordpress and Opecart, and administration in MODX looks a bit strange.

You should clone that site and put it in a museum.

To change CMS, you are going to have to match up all snippets with whatever plugins they have available. Seems like a lot more work ;-)
