I created a document called Marketing Materials and assigned it to the Marketing Docs document group.
I created a user called "cbarnes".
I linked the user group called Marketing Manager and document group called Marketing Docs.
I created a role called Marketing Manager and it has access to view, edit, open, etc.
I assigned cbarnes to the Marketing Manager role.

When I log in as cbarnes, I don’t see any files in the file list. Any ideas?

Include user "cbarnes" into _user group_ Marketing Manager.

That is checked as well. So is allow users to create in root of site. (I’ll spare you the screenshot.)

cbarnes should have an access to "Home" document (and all children leading/intermediating to Marketing), because it is a parent/ancestor of Marketing.

How do I do that without giving him access to edit that document?

FYI, I changed the Home document to Public and it now shows up in the file list by itself. None of the other pages show up as they are all assigned to document groups other than the public group.

I cannot give you correct answer for your last question, because I know neither your project’s goals nor its details. The simpliest way would be to move "Marketing" to root level of the project tree. If you need for some reasons to list "Marketing" in the menu structure in the place where it is now -- create a document link pointing to moved "Marketing".
