    Hi there,

    I dont like MODX manager to request files from google or gravatar or any external domain until I tell MODX to do so. I build sites and I dont want to deliver my clients to external services.

    If anyone knows where to shut that communication down, please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Guido

      This should be submitted as separate FRs to GitHub as there is no simple setting at this time. That being said, it also means you should turn off Package Management, RSS Feeds (which are using Feedburner but may move to direct feeds soon from modx.com) and the Welcome Page. There may be a feature request to disable Gravatar already, there is a bug with it in 2.3 where it will time out if it can't reach Gravatar in a timely fashion.

        You can stop the two feeds in several ways, you can go to Dashboards and remove the two feed widgets from the default dashboard. Or you can go to System Settings and turn them off with the feed_modx_news_enabled and feed_modx_security_enabled settings.

        You can fix the Gravatar business in manager/controllers/default/header.php by patching the getUserImage() function beginning on line 93
            public function getUserImage()
            {
                /** @var modUserProfile $userProfile */
                $userProfile = $this->modx->user->getOne('Profile');

                if ($userProfile->photo) {
                    // First, handle user defined image
                    $src = $this->modx->getOption('connectors_url', MODX_CONNECTORS_URL)
                        .'system/phpthumb.php?zc=1&h=128&w=128&src='
                        .$userProfile->photo;
                    $userImage = '<img src="' . $src . '" />';
                } else {
                    // Fallback to Gravatar
                    $gravemail = md5(
                        strtolower(
                            trim($userProfile->email)
                        )
                    );
                    $gravsrc = $this->modx->getOption('url_scheme', null, 'http://') . 'www.gravatar.com/avatar/'
                    .$gravemail . '?s=128&d=mm';
                    $userImage = '<img src="' . $gravsrc . '" />';
                }

                return $userImage;
            }

        You can remove it altogether if you prefer https://github.com/modxcms/revolution/pull/11716#issuecomment-49737594

          Thank you for your quick and precise input!

          I solved it for now until MODX has its own feedserver back smiley

          I disabled the Gravatar by deleting it in the Menu settings and Disabled the feeds in system settings->site.

            Are Welcome Page and Package Management both connected to external companies or to MODX?

              I know how you feel, I don't like sites that are going here, there and everywhere to load who-knows-what. Sometimes it's necessary, like a video streaming service or a CDN to take the load of serving static files off of busy sites. But running to Google to get fonts, running to somebody else to get js files, etc etc etc... sometimes I can't get into an otherwise live site because it's hung waiting for some third-party service that is not loading. Very annoying.

                I just dont like google or any company know almost everything I do online. I cant control what happens to my data and I cant even look into it. So I like to serve it all by myself.

                  Guido,

                  I totally get people wanting to protect their privacy and want reasonable control over how their applications run.

                  2.3.1 switches the Security feed to modx.com but the RSS feeds historically (from back in the Evo days) have been at Feedburner (which is at Google) for us to be able to track stats or change the location of the feeds withouth having to make changes to MODX. I think the best solution going forward would be for us to create weblinks at modx.com and use those for the feeds in the future whereby we can change them however we'd like withouth having to update the feed at the application level.

                  Also in 2.3.1, there is a new system setting to turn off Gravatar. This is important for sure.

                  With regard to the Welcome Page and Package Management, those are on MODX servers.
