A JSON array of packages to load on MODX instantiation. In the format [{"packagename":{path":"path/to/package"},{"anotherpkg":{"path":"path/to/otherpackage"}}]
Does this mean that every time MODX is run all of the packages listed here are loaded? Front-end? Back-end?

Hm. Well, that's certainly an incentive to keep my installed extras cleaned out if I'm not using them.
Yes, on every request, front or back. I'm not sure if that includes moving from one Manager page to another, but I think it does.
