Thanks I finally figured it out. Yep adding the parent allowed me to see container>resource1 . To hide the other resources within that specific container I dragged them into a user group with a higher priority to hide them. I also had to give anonymous permission to view the user groups so the website itself was viewable and to avoid 503s.
I just know I'll be referring to this post again in a years time! Haha!
