Hi,
is there an approval system built in Modx?
So that a manager user with restricted rights, can save documents, but don’t publish them. An e-mail is sent to one or more administrators/proofreaders that can check the content and publish the page.

No. You would need to have a plugin to do that.
Is there an existing plugin to do this?
One would think that this kind of approval behavior is standard cms behavior ... Modx has astonished me with quite a bit of smart-thinking techniques but this kind of approval is something I miss really

You’re looking for publishing workflows which would require a lot of effort to build on top of the 096x code base. This is already on the radar/roadmap for 097 and beyond.
