Php as FastCGi or Apache process

Hi there,

I'd like to recommend a check on setup if php is running as a fastCGI process. I currently ran into trouble (about 6 hours of unpaid work) to figure out that the MODX I was upgrading was running on php as an apache process. So most of the packages stuff etc it not working properly, site is down the whole day now.

I am sure it will save some of us a lot of trouble.

You can find this out with a simple script before installing PHP, or by running the phpinfo script from the link in the Reports->System Info menu item.

My point was: it should be checked during the setup.

Case 1:
fresh installation. You should be told if the server does not meet the requirements. You dont have a menu for phpinfo() in that case.

Case 2:
Upgrading a site. In that case you have the menu, but as the site is running, you assume it will still work after the upgrade. Some setups work even with php as an apache module, it depends on the hoster. In my case right now, it doesnt work. Some files belong to the apache process and cant be overwritten by the ftp user.

Bad thing: you can downgrade the files, but not the database.

So, its essential for some setups to have an automated check during setup.
