Hello MODx people.
I just upgraded my xampp installation from version 1.6.4 to 1.6.6a. Version 1.6.6a runs Apache 2.2.8, php 5.2.5 and mysql 5.0.51a. I took a copy of the whole xampp directory first. The install went without a hitch. However, when I went to my MODx site (this one is still running version 0.9.6) I realised that a) the order of all the items on the menu (organised by WayFinder), which should have been sorted by menuindex, were in the wrong order. Also, all the articles on a news listing, which are sorted by date by Ditto, had reversed order so as to be ascending and not descending. When I log into the manager, the documents in the document explorer on the left hand side appear to be ordered randomly, rather than by menuitem like they used to be. I have checked the documents themselves and the dates and menuindex appear correctly.
I have no idea what’s going on!! I have tried clearing the cache, but to no avail. Is there anyone that can help?
Thank you,
Paul
Thanks for such a quick reply!
I normally try to keep up to date with the latest versions of all software for security reasons unless I have a good reason not to... but in this case "If it aint broke, don’t fix it" was the rule I should have been following. Anyway, I restored my backup of the previous version of xampp (which uses mysql 5.0.45) and now everything is functioning normally again.
Cheers,
Paul
Just in case anyone else uses xampp and is considering upgrading to the latest version, I just tried it.
The latest xampp (1.6.7) uses mysql 5.0.51b. I have two sites running modx 0.9.6.1p2 and one running 0.9.6. The two sites running 0.9.6.1p2 work fine with the latest mysql version. The modx 0.9.6 installation still suffers from the ordering problem however. My conclusion is that this is likely to be a bug in modx 0.9.6 that was corrected in a subsequent version, rather than a bug in mysql.
I would advise anyone planning on using modx 0.9.6 who wants to upgrade to either mysql 5.0.51a or mysql 5.0.51b (or later) to first upgrade their installation of modx to modx 0.9.6.1p2.
Cheers,
Paul

This is a known bug in MySQL that affected anything accessing MySQL, not just MODx, not even just PHP. The latest version of MySQL fixes the bug, but it is not yet available to non-commercial users (as in those who pay get the latest fixed version, those using the free version don’t).
There is a workaround, but it’s not as efficient.
Weird. I wonder why I didn’t see this with any of my modx 0.9.2.1p2 sites. I checked that the menu order was correct (it clearly wasn’t for the modx 0.9.6 install), but I didn’t try changing anything or playing it... Maybe the modx 0.9.2.1p2 sites are affected, but I just didn’t test them well enough?
I’ll report back if I get any more info.

The older MODx may not have used the same more efficient queries that the buggy MySQL breaks.
Yes. I think you’re probably right.
Thanks for your help again Sottwell. You always seem to be one of the people that come to the rescue whenever I post any requests for help. I appreciate it.
Would you fancy helping me out with a request for help on a problem with character encodings upgrading to modx 0.9.6.1p2 too?

Hi Labasus
When I asked the question previously I was running my sites on Windows using xampp, but I have since bought myself a server, installed linux on it and have transferred all my sites over. The server currently has mysql 5.0.51a installed and all the websites are running fine.
Thanks for letting me know though. Your post may well save some other people some grief.
Cheers.
