Answered Thumbs in MODX browser are not created

I have a fresh and squeaky clean install of 2.2.14 on PHP 5.3.28, GD bundled (2.1.0 compatible), no ImageMagick. It's a shared webspace, Host Europe in Germany.

When i upload a file through the default upload dialog, the creation of the thumb goes wrong somehow.
There is actually a file being created in /core/cache/phpthumb with the seemingly correct cache name. But nothing is written to the file, it has size 0.

I first had this problem, when i transferred a site from modxcloud to the server. It worked in the cloud, but not anymore on that server. So i tried the fresh install, no luck.
It seems to be specific to this hoster, i remember having had the same problem before, but then i could work around it by not using the browser.

Right now i don't even know which way to look.

It seems indeed to the case, that ImageMagick is required for thumbnails in the manager.
Testet on a managed server with ImageMagick at the same hoster and it all works fine.

Sometimes i should just believe and rtfm.
