    Dear MODx-ers,

Having looked around and thought about it for a while it has become apparent that I will need a CMS going forward. Following some research MODx appeals more than some other well known solutions but I would like some advice.

I currently have a fairly basic website for my business, consisting of static pages and a handful of php scripts governing customer login and access to downloads. My business sells business software and provides ongoing support to customers which they can renew annually. Whilst a customer has valid support they have access to product updates they can download and some documents. Customers' basic details are held in a MySql database so that they can maintain their contact details but I also access this from my own admin software to update things like their support expiry dates when they renew.

From a customer support viewpoint the current site works but adding any useful content, articles, useful information is getting more difficult as its a growing static site. My understanding following much googling on the subject is that I would be better served re-building the whole lot from the ground up using MODx.

So what I'm looking for are any pointers you may have on how best to set things up, any pitfalls to look out for when developing this kind of site. I'd especially be interested to hear any thoughts on useful add-ons or any tutorials you may have come across for this kind of site. As with anything useful there is an awful lot of information available but I'll take any help I can get in sifting through that.

The only "limitation" I have (if it even is one) is that my customer database will still be held on my own software which will keep it in synch.

I look forward to reading your comments.

What you're about to create is a provider site.
This is what others have been creating in these months.

Dealing with blog is easy with MODX.
You can use Articles, Grid Class Key, or Collections to hold the child documents.

Sync-ing the users data is also a challenge, you need to create a plugin to sync them from your own software to MODX, because at the end you will need user login based on MODX's ACL.

What I'm saying is that this is doable in MODX, but you will need to understand the inner API more, because most of the add-ons will be custom ones, not ready out-of-the-box which can be downloaded from Extras.

MODx is great, but knowing how to use it well makes it perfect!
