Running in time out on dashboard with newsfeed and security feed

MODX-version: 2.2.10 and 2.2.13, 2.2.14

Since a few days our installation is running into a time out message from nginx-server when one of the feed widgets are included into the dashboard. No error without them.

This may depends from the server, but this is new.

My workaround now is to excluded this feeds from the dashboard, but what is the reason.

Is the feed service getting slower?

Could be any number of things slowing down the feed. There are a lot of people sending millions of clicks at some sites to try to bring them down, and that traffic can slow down whole sections of the Internet. Or MODX may be having a problem... I got a gateway error from the Forums a couple of days ago.

My guess is that it's the same thing that's still making the Forums slow down and/or time out (guru meditation). A total timeout is much less common than it was, but it still occurs.

I wonder if there's a way to set the maximum time MODX will wait for the feeds. That could be a System Setting.

I couldn't find any setting for this in MODX. This is by the way a very ugly failure because the user (with no deeper knowledge) will think there is a problem with the login.
While this problem still exists for me, I will try to find a better way to handle this. I will report here.

You can set these so they are only displayed for certain levels of users, so your average "content editor" user won't even see them. Personally, I prefer to disable them altogether, but then I subscribe to the security newsletter and keep up with the forums announcements so I'm always aware of what's going on.

I dislike having any part of my sites depending on the availability of any third-party service, so I don't even link to Google Code for font or code libraries. Not only are you at the mercy of their service's availability and security, but there's always the question of just how much tracking of your client's users are they doing? I'm fairly sure MODX isn't tracking every access to those feeds, but we all know perfectly well that plenty of other services do track everything.
