I have to compile a very large 'directory' of pages as part of a website, but I want to separate them as much as possible.
I would like for searches to be conductible on either or both the main web content and the directory. In future I may also need to give permission to people to edit only this content.
On the face of it I thought contexts would be the way to do this, but I do not want to separate the content into a different domain or anything like that. I just want it to sit at domain.com/directory/blah. I cannot find much info on using contexts for basic content separation.
It also occurs to me that a logical separation within the database would be very beneficial. Do contexts offer this?
Any thoughts, links and advice would be much appreciated.

You could use contexts, but in my opinion that would be overly complicating the issue. Contexts use the same site_content table for all resources.
The search snippets can be configured to search only in specified branches of the Tree.
User and resource groups can be used to control who gets to edit what.
If you really want a separation in the database, I would suggest using MIGXdb to manage the custom tables. Here's a tutorial for building a gallery using MIGXdb and I don't see why it would be very difficult to modify the basic structure to be a directory instead of an image gallery

RE separating searches - How would I create a search in simplesearch or advsearch where I only included the web content?
I have a general search on the site and I don't want it to search this new directory, however when I try to use exclude in SS it doesn't exclude the stated resource and its children.
I would just create a list of IDs to include, but I fear future editors would add content and not add IDs to the search snippets.
