The online documentation looks quite thin to me. Look in the downloaded package for a readme.txt file or some other documentation.

There's nothing to it. Just put the file somewhere in the web space and run it. It asks for login information. Other than that, it's not all that different in operation from phpMyAdmin. But fast!

Hm. I do not like the fact that there's a bunch of compressed PHP code, apparently using the google code library

I suppose having obfuscated and compressed PHP code is suspect from long habit.
It looks to be un-obfuscated here:
https://github.com/vrana/adminer. Maybe it's only compressed in the downloadable version.

Yes, I see there that the compile.php is what creates the single, compressed file. Interesting.
