This is the broken box model problem with IE. Normally it has to do with the way IE calculates widths/borders/margins.

Google "ie box model hacks" and there is a lot of info and tricks.

Also you may get more specific help here if you post a link or some code. grin

Most box model issues are related to IE6. IE7 resolved a few but some still remain (IIRC). It can be some other IE hack as well (there are quite a few) like margins for list items.

            ok i’ll start looking

and my teacher is making me use IE aswell >:(

            thx!

btw, and this is a real noobquestion probably but i’m really new to modx so don’t judge me:

where can i edit the source code of my main website in the modx manager
i mean, if i look at the preview of my page, and i go to tools->sourcecode
i see the full code of my page
but in modx manager i really can’t find this code anywhere and i figured it would be easy to be able to edit that code aswell

            t.a.a.

In the manager you have access to the template source in the TEmplates tag in the Manage Resources section.

I suggest copying it to a code editor to get the syntax coloring and line numbers etc.. then pasting it back.

Also always keep a back up, you can duplicate an existing template to keep as a backup.

Where are you going to school. Are you learning CSS web design and being forced to use IE6? This is insane!

On a serious note it looks to me like a flawed layout. To do a three column layout like this you should be using floats and no margin tricks to make the content move over. Most simple layouts will work if you have a container and the three subcontainers inside with a left float, widths and simple margins enough to leave space between. IE 5-6 has problems with negative margins and laying out boxes that don’t follow simple rules.

No standards based designer worth their salt would ever let you design in IE first. I would strongly recommend that you try it in Firefox, Opera or Safari (on mac) and then fix it for IE which is the industry standard workflow.

We are allowed to use any software we desire but..
when you make a website that runs perfectly in Opera, it has to work in IE and Firefox aswell.
And because here in Belgium people think you’re talkin about theatre when you mention Opera and the forrest when you talk about Firefox, We are forced to work in the IE platform.

                  Aaaanywho
I apreciate all of your help!

                  thx

I am not saying don’t make your site work for IE. I am saying you make it work in a browser that works like it should and then use a recommended method to fix it for the browser that always gets it wrong.

If you don’t you will always have problems getting it to look right in all the other browsers it would be much easier to make it work in all the other browsers at once and then tweak for the one that plays differently.

We still have to have people see our sites in IE here as well and we do. It would be ridiculous to ignore IE users but it is equally foolish to design only for it and hope it will all turn out for the other ones.
