ContextRouter

Goal:
Manage 2 TLDs with one MODX install: german.de and english.com.

• german.de uses the “web” context.
• english.com uses the context “english”.
• In the hosting cPanel english.com is Parked and points to german.de where MODX is installed.
• There are index and error pages for both contexts.

I've followed Ben Marte's tutorial to the letter http://www.cmstricks.com/blog/2013/05/10/contextrouter-review/ and while english.com does redirect to german.de as expected (as set in the cPanel Parked Domain section) that's where it stops. MODX and/or ContextRouter doesn't seem to recognize the settings for the “english” context.

It all seems pretty simple but clearly something's amiss, either in my comprehension or execution. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Should it not be redirecting to your 'english' context instead of 'german.de'?

Within cPanel try disabling the redirect for 'english.com'. Make sure the Domain Root is the folder you have MODX installed in, usually '/public_html'.

Hi David,

This is where I'm a bit fuzzy. Are you referring to the cPanel redirect or the MODX Context Property settings for “english”?

If you're referring to cPanel then if MODX is installed in public_html of german.de then how do I point the parked domain, english.com, to the “english” context within german.de?

I double-ckecked and the Domain Root is indeed '/public_html'.

You basically want 'english.com' pointing at '/public_html' (which you say it is). MODX/ContextRouter takes it from there. The 'german.de' address doesn't matter as you want only want 'english.com' using the english context.

Within cPanel > parked domains, does the 'english.com' domain have 'german.de' listed in the 'Redirects to' column? If so, click on 'Manage Redirection' and click 'Disable Redirection'.

Clear MODX and browser cache and try again.

If still not working then perhaps a .htaccess issue. Try speaking with the hosting company.

A little progress ...

Now when I visit english.com in the browser I see the correct url, however the index page I created in MODX for the 'english' context isn't rendering, it shows a blank homepage (the default server index.html file located in public_html). Also, in MODX, when I use the View function to look at the 'english.com' index page it shows the german.de homepage instead. [ed. note: todd.b last edited this post 12 years, 6 months ago.]

You shouldn't have to change anything in cpanel, both domains point to the same MODX installation and ContextRouter does the rest.

@todd.b can you post a screen shot of both of your context settings?

how does your htaccess file look?

Hi Ben,

I'll post a screenshot as soon as I can of where I left off. Because of time constraints I had to go with 2 independent MODX installations, one for each site, but I would still like to get this sorted for another project. Thanks.

It's the default MODX .htaccess. Other than setting the RewriteCond and RewriteRule I haven't changed anything.
