Ok I know there have been quite a lot of threads about forum integration in to MODx and rightly so... I think a lot of us would like that MODx and maybe 1 or 2 chosen forums could be integrated in to the login system of MODx to have that seamless feeling that something like nuke has. Nuke is old etc, I know but the integration was a strong point.

Could someone of the MODx team answer this as best as they can... is it ever going to be something that’s going to be looked at seriously to have an all in one system that allows members who sign up to the MODx site, to login in to say an SMF forum and seemlessly be able to update their profiles, view MODx locked pages etc without the need for a module?

I’ve tried the SMF plugin, which was so close to what I was looking for but it just didn’t quite make it... I don’t even want to pretend I know what i’m doing so i’m not taking anything away from it but it’s been a long time since anything was done with it.

I can appreciate that other things are more important than this but it’s something I really would like to know. Will 9.0.7 bring this possibility closer at all or is it just beyond what MODx is about or capable of doing?

MODx really is a solid package and it’s really opened up my eyes to how difficult web design actually is and the efforts people put in to their work, great job.

If I wasn’t a full time student I would be donating to you guys as I can’t say thanks enough for MODx and I hope you don’t get annoyed with another forum question LOL.

This has been discussed many times. The problem is that there is no common standardized method of user authentication in PHP. Every application uses its own schemes, its own session and cookie names and variables and its own database structure. It is quite possible with MODx as it is to write plugins and modules to bridge different systems, but it is not a trivial task, and every time the other application is upgraded there is a good chance that the bridging code will break on the new version.

But yes, the 0.9.7 core will make such things a little easier from the MODx end.

Thank you for the reply.... I hope the new version of MODx opens up the possibility for this. I’m looking forward to seeing what’s new in 9.0.7!

If there weren’t "annoying forum questions", MODx wouldn’t keep getting better and better tongue

I agree with Susan’s remarks - under the 0.9.7 core and permission system, I can imagine a general object-oriented approach to integration schemes that would be easier to maintain and perhaps increase contributors to such projects.

I’m hopeful and looking forward to seeing how MODx matures... It’s excellent already so the more work that goes into the project the better. Fingers crossed something can be done. Thanks!
