Hi,
Some of my SMF members have reported problems with my webpages today: they receive a Modx parse error. I’ve checked the logs, and I see entries similar to the following:
[Tue Feb 12 14:20:57 2008] [error] PHP Warning: session_start() [<a href=’function.session-start’>function.session-start</a>]: open(/tmp/sess_xxxxxxxxxxxxx, O_RDWR) failed: Permission denied (13) in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/manager/includes/config.inc.php on line 59
Line 59: session_name($site_sessionname);
Is this a failure with server’s tmp directory? I’ve had one or two problems with this before. Anyway, I disabled Log Visits in the manager (I don’t know why I had it enabled, I don’t use it), but should I empty the modx_log_access table too?
Thanks.

Yes, it does sound like a problem with the server’s temp directory; perhaps it is full...
BTW, if you are still running a version of MODx that includes the built-in access logging, emptying that table is the least of your worries to be frank, though you definitely should do so on a regular basis. We urge you to upgrade.
Hi,
Yes, a full tmp directory was the cause of some problems a while ago for me, so it all fits.
No, I am bang-up-to-date. I just had the logging enabled, but no system of using the data; this is why there is no consequence to my disabling access logging.
I’ll empty the table.
Thanks.
PS. What systems of using the access log are there available? Or is more just there in case someone wishes to code something?

That entire system was removed some time ago, as it was causing more trouble than it was worth. Plus the handful of security issues have been patched in the newer versions of MODx since its removal, which is why the strong recommendation of an upgrade.
Most of the sites I’ve worked on come with some kind of statistical package in the hosting plan, like Webalyzer or something.

That option still exists in the Manager, but it is only used for snippets that control external logging applications; I doubt that it’s really used much at all. The original MODx logging tables no longer exist, and the logging code has been removed from the parser.
