Ok, my deepest apologies if this has already been asked somewhere else, had some trouble searching for manager directory... As I’m sure you all know those words are used very frequently on these forums.

Anyways, what I was wondering is if it was possible to change the manager directory (or folder name) on my web server without any issues. Basically I run several MODx websites and I don’t want the security vulnerability of people being able to locate the manager directory easily. I tried just a quick rename of the folder and that didn’t work. Are there any settings/files I may be overlooking to do this?

It’s hard-coded in a lot of places. I’ve done it, but it was by no means easy.

In the new core, you can change the names/locations of all the MODx-installed directories, but unfortunately as Susan suggests, it required a great deal of effort and a number of fundamental changes that would be next to impossible to port back to the current releases in a way that was compatible moving forward.

That’s no problem, I appreciate the information on it. I’ll definitely steer clear of doing a fix for it myself. Really looking forward to the next version.

Actually, I just noticed that MODX_MANAGER_PATH and MODX_MANAGER_URL are set in the config.inc.php file, so I started picking through the files to replace all hard-coded references with these constants.

So far I have all the files in manager/actions done. I’m also keeping a record of the line numbers in each file that needs changing.

It’s a little tricky, because some of them involve calculations of the paths that are actually already done in config.inc.php, so a whole line has to be replaced.

But my manager still works, so it looks like I’ve got the actions all taken care of. Processors will be next, but I must admit that this isn’t exactly a priority issue at the moment, so I can’t say for sure when I’ll be all finished.

Of course, the real test will be when I think I’ve got it all, and change the name of the manager folder!

I must admit that’s pretty damn cool. I may be completely wrong in this assumption (99.99% chance lol!) but wouldn’t removing those calculations, although extremely minor, clean up even the slightest bit of bandwidth? If so, probrably not enough to matter. I really need to go to school and learn how to code all of this stuff so I can join in on the fun lol.

                Dark,

I think using MODx and tiztag will be a great step at learning more code. I’ve learned so much from working with MODx, rewriting or changing snippets to suit my need. Nothing like WAMPP, MODx, and a cup of coffee.

Yeah, toying with MODx is definitely giving me a grasp at how it works. At least the calls for the most part. I’ve fiddled with the snippets for modding/customization, but only ever so slightly. The great thing about most of the code is it’s for the most part in readable Engeek. Sorry, I meant English. Haha.

School? I barely finished high school (first in my family to do so) and have taught myself. Well, with the help of a lot of great tech book authors like Tom Swan, Jeff Duntemann and Gary Cornell. And many, many web tutorials since then.

Hardware hacking was strictly on my own. "Go home and knit booties for your grandchildren" I was literally told by the proprietor of the first shop I bought parts from. Four days later I faxed him for a price list from the machine I built. I got a phone call from him about two minutes later, and a few months after that he offered me a job. It’s been a lot of fun grin grin
