Is FormIt a replacement or alternative to use instead of Login?
no, Formit is for handling (validating, send mails, storing to db) all kind of Forms.
For example Contact-Forms, upload Forms, Add/Modify db-stuff forms.
Login is for handling Register/Login/Logout/Manage User-Profile

Hello Diane and welcome to MODX I made a FormIt tutorial you can view on my blog
CMSTricks which guides you on how to use FormIt to create a form that submits an email.
For Login I suggest you take a look at the tutorial for the basic setup in the
RTFM site.
Remember you can always find information in the
MODXDocs site.
Hope that helps and good luck.
