    Hi!
I'm completely new to websites and editing websites. I don't want to make a mess on the website, so my question is I see that there's new updates and I'm not sure how or should I update the system.

If I update to a newer version will it change the content on the website or will it only provide a newer interface for me to add or change content.
Currently, the interface is very hard to use and outdated, so I would prefer to upgrade to have a more ease of use.

I only wanted to make sure that nothing will change the current content on the site. If it will not interfere, which version should I upgrade to?

    Thanks!

      Hi Michelle,

What is it you want to achieve. There are three options which you can do.

1: Stay on Modx Evolution and upgrade to 1.0.12 (which has a new updated interface) but some snippets also need updated too (ajaxsearch springs to mind i think (landing page parameters) - but its just upgrading as normal - http://rtfm.modx.com/evolution/1.0/administration/upgrading

2: Opt to go down the fork of clippercms which is still under active development (but dont quote me) again has a different interface

3: Upgrade to Revolution using provisioner and get the new interface that Rev has but have some massive alterations to make to the site e.g replacing Ditto with getResources/pdoTools for example - which sounds like that will be currently beyond your scope.

No upgrade will change the content, only the manager theme and update the snippets that run the website.

I would suggest that you first try option 1 - which is to upgrade the CMS to the latest version to see if the UI improvements help with your current situation. the CMS overall is very easy to use to edit content unless its been setup and configured in a very convoluted way.

I would recommend taking a backup of all the files and database before any updates happen though wink

Hope that helps and good luck

Thank you for the information. At this point considering my novice level, I will upgrade to the 1.0.12, which will be huge upgrade, I'm assuming.

How can I do a backup of all files and database? What can happen if someone does not do a backup?

        Michelle

If you don't do a backup and something goes wrong during the upgrade, you have lost your website. In 9 years of working with both versions of MODX, I have never had an upgrade go bad, but you never know.

Your hosting provider should have a backup feature in the hosting Control Panel.

You should clear the site cache, and also clear the Reports -> Manager Actions and Reports -> System Events logs before backing up. And make sure you log out of the Manager before you do the upgrade.
