...Part of the income of modMore will be donated to MODx (well that is what Mark said during MODXpo wink )...

Yes, 10% of the revenue from premium extras* is donated to MODX. €680 on November 20th, and the credit automatically assigned to MODX' account is over €500 again so that will probably get paid out again soon. wink That will actually push modmore (way) over the $1000 threshold for the "Visionary Supporter" donation level on the Wall of Fame so I'll make sure modmore gets added there then so you have some proof MODX actually did receive that money and I'm not making this up tongue

Can't wait to join Susan in the "Ottwell Society" level as that will both mean the business is going great and that it's actually making a difference in keeping MODX running.

(*The conference we're organising doesn't have a 10% margin so that's excluded from the 10%-of-revenue-donation hence me specifying it as revenue from premium extras. If the conference results in a profit we'll add a share of that to the donations. Future modmore initiatives that have a sufficient margin will be included in the revenue donation though. )

Thanks for the love Friso wink

And I better shut up about modmore now as this is starting to feel like hijacking a thread about commercial addons in general tongue

    • Investigating SimpleCart, it looks like the 78Eu is for a single user license, then any more domains you want to use it on are only 15Eu. So I guess I could get one license for myself, then every time I build another site that uses it it's only 15Eu. That is certainly reasonable enough, if that's correct.

Both BobRay and Bruno Perner (to name just two) create exceptional Extras and are supporting users of those Extras on these Forums. Those Extras transform both how we use MODX and how we create websites, yet are "free". I don't know how sustainable that model is and yet they still continue to crank out new Extras and improve features of existing ones.

        Interesting topic.

With respect to the sustainability of the model -- if I needed the donations and purchases of my extras to eat, I'd be heading to the food bank about now. wink

My experience with support is that if the extra is solid and the docs are good enough, there's almost no support necessary. I'd say that about 90% of the interactions I have with users are about feature requests.

For commercial extras, pricing is definitely a horror. There's really no way of knowing the optimum price for an extra. 500 sales at $10 is a lot better than 10 sales at $30, but maybe you'd have the same number of sales at $30 that you would at $10.

I thought everyone with a MODX site would want SiteCheck and that $25 was a reasonable price for an unlimited-site license on a tool that could save you time and trouble. Sales have been relatively weak, but I really don't know if the price is a factor. One thing is for sure, you can't price things by how long it takes to produce them. I worked on SiteCheck (to the exclusion of almost everything else) for at least 6 months and on MyComponent (which is still free) for well over a year. I'm sure Redactor also took a lot longer than it's price would indicate.

On the topic of SimpleCart, I would expect that any full-featured, reliable e-commerce extra would be a total monster to write, test, and create docs for. I definitely envy them their ability to charge people by the month. wink

        • I suspect that Sitecheck is just not widely understood. It's like having a fire extinguisher in your kitchen as well as a smoke alarm - a real life-saver, but how many people have one?

To resurrect this old thread and chime in, I don't mind at all paying for quality extras. Redactor was the first one for MODX I bought when it came out because for me, in support times for the site owner, it was easier than constant issues with TinyMCE.

I quite like the Minishop2 & SimpleDream model (although the Russian docs are a barrier), no cost for the basic extra which will be fine for the sites you do for free, but paid addons for functionality that commercial sites will need like pricing discount modules, payment gateway integration and advanced search features.

SiteCheck by Bob though, well worth 25 bucks for unlimited sites.
