Simple Search and apostrophes/hyphens

I am using this: simplesearchdriverresourcescustom.class.php for SimpleSearch found on this forum, to push certain results to the top of the page. It is working perfectly, unless the search term contains any special character, like an apostrophe or dash. Then no results are returned. The same search term without the apostrophe returns correctly. Any ideas how to fix?
