    Hi,

Just getting re-started in MODX (after I looked at it last year but did nothing.)

I just installed EVO 1.0.12, and installed with all checkboxes checked (to get the sample pages and elements.) I see that some things (like the Extra, TinyMCE) did get installed, but not the sample pages, menu, css, etc.

Where can I find that, for a manual install?

    Thanks,

    Dennis
    • When you get to the page with the install options, there is a box to check at the top for installing the sample site.

To do that now, re-upload the install folder and re-install in upgrade mode, and check the box.

Susan/sottwell, thanks so much. Done and done. Is that sample site your work? What a wonderful sample site to help people get up to speed with MODX.

        • If I recall correctly, Zi did that. However, if you want to work with Evolution, you may find this helpful http://sottwell.pogwatch.com/

I switched to Revo a couple of years ago, and the Pogwatch people kindly provided space to host the archive of my Evo work. So it's getting old, but most of it is still useful.

If I had any clients with the budget to afford a fast hosting environment, I would have gone to Revo, but the fact that it is said to be slow sounds like a deal-breaker on cheap shared hosting accounts that are already slow.

I need to show the site owners just how easy it is to

            • create a new navigation button
            • create a new dropdown menu item in navigation
            • create a new, empty page from a template (edit it, and publish it)
            • edit an existing page on the site

that's my current task, so they will be comfortable with MODX. If I cannot show that within a few days of my own learning process, they will insist on using another CMS (one of them really wants Wordpress, another wants Joomla...)

Now, all I have to do is figure out MODX evo...

            ...looking for tutorials...

            • My old site's archive has an extensive section "MODx From the Inside". Also Mary's Coding Pad has a lot of good stuff for Evo. http://codingpad.maryspad.com/tag/evolution-1-0/

                • By the way, Revolution runs quite successfully on most shared hosting. There are a few of the really cut-rate, heavily overloaded hosting services where it doesn't do so well, but some like SkyToaster and A2 for example aren't much if any more expensive and do quite well.

And for development and demonstration and training purposes you can get a free dev account on the MODX Cloud, which has a number of serious advantages, such as one-click upgrades and daily backups with one-click restore for when you do something dumb and really screw up the dev site. Which I do often. And for moving sites around, like from dev to production, there is Vapor (it does work both ways). There is also Teleport, Vapor's big brother, but I've never figured out how to get Teleport to work. Besides, Teleport uses SSH access and many shared hosting providers don't provide that.

                    Thanks again. Susan.

Now that I have looked around in MODX, it looks pretty impressive. There are still a few things I don't see how to do, and have not been able to find documentation to help.

                    {edit} I'm going to call this resolved, and ask other questions in other threads.}
