I wonder if it has to do with this issue:

It was on the dock to be included in the 2.2.14 release, I believe, but didn't make it.
Will try it out this week.

I think you're right. It was probably introduced with the phpThumb update in 2.2.12.
If you have PHP 5.3 or greater, you can use Resizer and avoid this bug.

Yes!
Resizer restores everything (on the front end of course) back to normal.
