I recently tried setup a quick site in Joomla, and recently had a client request a site in ProStores. I just can’t take that step back from MODx.

What I wanted to do in Joomla should have been easy. But I had to use the installer for some Templates. I had to install some components and modules. Then I had to login to their forums to add a hotfix-patch to their install. After a few hours I decided to try MODx (this needed to be quick).

In 3 hours I had MODx up and working with a blog, comments, photo gallery, search, login/register. This included installing Maxigallery (first time for me) and an upgrade to TinyMCE with the AJAX File Browser. AND the template was pure CSS- my design.

I just can’t go back from MODx ease, speed, and utility.

For the prostores system, we had created a beautiful design. I implemented foxycart on the demo site to test it’s functionality. I was setup in less than an hour with my beautiful design and fully-functioning (test-mode) shopping cart.

It has been 3 weeks now and the prostores site is still not working correctly. Everytime the client uses the WYSIWYG editor, prostores breaks all of the beautiful design and code. Not to mention a kludgy admin area that has you clicking in 15 places to setup a simple product with 2 options and shipping.

1 hour in Foxycart == working.
3 weeks in prostores == still broken.

hours in joomla == almost there
3 hours in modx == fully functional

So I just wanted to say thanks for ’ruining’ me- now I know how easy it should be, I can’t switch back from the MODx way.

    Thanks,
    Chuck

PS - we’re switching from prostores to foxycart and saving the client a bundle of money each month!

Once you go MODx you don’t go back. Isn’t that what they say grin We are all spoiled, and things just keep getting better...happy days.

I chose the same path from MyCart.

I can’t go back either. Still de-joomla-izing and figuring out how to do a few more things (I’m hoping Susan will help me again if my search falters).

I wholeheartedly agree with you about the time spent configuring stores. I was really slow with Foxycart at first, now I’m ready to add stores. In just a week I got two new clients for a MODx+FoxyCart store.

I cannot justify the time and expense of editing a Joomla+Virtue(barf)Mart store. It takes too freaking long.

                    I couldn’t agree more...

I just came back from Drupal... *shudder* . It’s a powerful CMS, it just drove me to tears :’(

I re-installed ModX and literally had my site with all my own design running in 1 hour and 30 minutes flat.

ModX truly closes the distance between "What I want" and "What I need to do to get there". That’s the best way I can describe it.

But I have to admit, I am very envious of the user base/community in Drupal and Joomla. That’s why I really want to get ModX out there so everyone knows how great of a CMS it is...so we also have a gazillion users crawling around the forums, creating things, helping people out and keeping the project alive. So we have more than two or three people trying to create a new version. This CMS can be GREAT...someone pretty high up in the Joomla forums even said: "The CMS itself needs refinement, but once it’s mature, it’ll be a great competitor for Joomla!, similar to what Drupal is right now." ...in response to a post I made about ModX... kiss

We need to get ModX out there (tactfully) !!!

                      ... and that’s what we’re trying to do !

I wouldn’t say community is the weak link for MODx : quite the contrary !

We have a really great user base : of course we can’t compare to Joomla or Drupal (in term of user base) which are way older projects but I think the interresting point is the very high quality contributors and the great spirit there is @ the MODx forums grin People are helping each other in a way I had only experienced with the Textpattern’s forum, back in the good days...

The challenge will be to keep it that way while continuing to grow. A too wide user base too soon could hurt the project, I have been convinced of this ever since I joined in 2005. I don’t think we should try to become the Joomla or Drupal community. At this stage, we need early adopters, reknowned designers and skilled devs.

I don’t mean to say we shouldn’t try to attract more users, but that we should only go marketing for the end users when we are done with severing ties to the legacy Etomite codebase (here is our weak link, really). That would be somewhere between 0.9.7 and 1.0.

We’ll get there but you’ll have to wait a bit. 0.9.7 will be a great jump which will require momentuum in the coders / adavanced users / early adopters community : converting existing addons, creating new will be key which means writing those and testing those. MODx won’t be the thing for those who await a pre-packaged solution (IMHO). My reading of the upcoming marketing challenge will be to attract more coders as the framework aspect of MODx gets more prominent, and get more skilled testers and early adopters / promoters to spread the word. It means a well defined target, and adapted communication channels and messages. We’re working on that.

Now about MODx being a competitor to Joomla or Drupal : we already are !!!
Even with less maturity, 90% of what you can achieve with Joomla or Drupal can not only be done with MODx, but more efficiently ! If you need revisionning, or elaborated workflow, I won’t argue : MODx needs to fill the gap. But in all other areas, we compete and ask a few people coming from Drupal or Joomla : we do better customization and flexibility-wise, by a BIG margin !

For designers, it’s a dream come true : templating is really easy and MODx adapts to your workflow, not the other way around... don’t get me started on template variables and what can be achieved with MODx ! (ok, Drupal has the CCK module but... not as good as TVs IMHO). I like not being forced into a content structure, and so do my clients ! Custom content structures are easy.

I think those who think "we’ll be a great competitor" are wrong, "we are great competitors" already tongue (yeah, well, maybe not tactful but true wink )
This is not yet widely known, and that’s on purpose, but more and more come to us and are silently switching...

                      Wait and see !
