Yesterday I ruined my night by trying to do a (usually) quick version upgrade to an Evo site (1.0.2 to 1.0.12).
I backed up the database.
Also the entire httpdocs dir on the server. I use Plesk on Linux, and now that Plesk allows zip and unzip, it's easy to do it right there and leave the backup file in the root dir as well as download a copy.
Then I got on with the update: uploaded the 1.0.12 zip file, unzipped and then copied the files to the httpdocs dir, making sure to select "Overwrite existing files". This is where 5hit hit fan: Plesk has a major issue: it doesn't overwrite, it copies the new dir
INSIDE the dir its supposed to overwrite. That's a big problem when trying to upgrade, as you can imagine.
So, I decided to revert to slow but reliable old FTP method. I unzipped the backup file to replace the original httpdocs dir, FTP'd up the unzipped 1.0.12 files into it and tried to open my-site/install in the browser...

You don't have permission to access /install on this server.
Turned out I couldn't access anything on that URL any more.
I spent a good hour trying to figure it out, replacing files, db etc. One thing I noticed was that the group name was different for the new httpdocs dir: psacln instead of psaserv. However, you cannot change that via Plesk and I don't have command line access, so I focussed on other solutions. Eventually though, I emailed the hosting company and sure enough, it was because the group name was wrong. They fixed it in a second.
So my note to self:
1. always check user and group names are correct
2. back up site files from WITHIN the httpdocs dir, if no command line access.
