I'm running MODX 2.2.10 and the installation was successful with no errors. The site was loaded up and everything ran normally for a few days. For no apparent reason, today I can't access the manager as the login URL shows a blank page. I tried running the installer but the setup URL displays the following error - "FATAL ERROR: MODX Setup cannot continue. Make sure your core/cache directory exists and is writable by the PHP process."

I've deleted all the contents of the core/cache directory and changed permissions to 777 but no luck. I've also tried repairing the SQL database and checked that the core/config/config.inc.php has all the right paths.

    Any suggestions?

On hosts using suPHP or something similar, 777 usually won't work. For directories, it should be be 755 -- 644 for files.

If setting the persmissions to 755 doesn't work, the problem may be the *ownership* of the core/cache directory.

It was originally 755 when the problem arose. I now believe it's a hosting issue as I've just tried uploading a file via FTP and received a "Disk Quota Exceeded" error despite cPanel stating there's a lot more disk space. So basically I can't write to the server at this point in time.

Definitely sounds like a server issue (which figures, since it went bad without you making any changes).

          Who is the host, BTW?

Hmm, I have the same error.
Last time, I had to manually install an older version of phpMyAdmin, however the error remains.
So, on what directory or file do I change the permissions to 777?
Do I need 777 or something less open?

My directory structure is /home/domain.com/public_html/core index.php manager phpmyadmin setup.
            Here are the permissions:
            [root@centos public_html]# ls -l
            total 36

I just changed the directory core to 777, but same error. [ed. note: eiger3970 last edited this post 11 years, 2 months ago.]

Thank you, however same error with 777 or 755.

                  Ok, fixed with command
                  # sudo chmod 777 /home/domain.com/public_html/core/cache.

                  755 won't work.
