What’s the best practice for implementing significant changes (ie, more than just adding a page here/there) to your production site without taking it offline? Certainly one way is to have a complete mirror site (eg, test.mydomain.com) and then you’d just export the SQL and copy the other files over. But is there a better way without having two completely separate site?
I suggest you try Localhost on your machine, try XAMP or EasyPHP or WampServer or something similar, or you could even install PHP, MySQL, Apache by yourself separately to have a localhost.
Actually, I have no problems with my platforms...I do use localhost and export/import SQL. I was asking more for my clients. It would be nice for my clients to be able to manage some level of migration, without having to run the SQL scripts via PHPMyAdmin.
If it is really big changes, I would setup a second modx (/development/ maybe). Have them do edits there. Then create a form that backs up the current_live_sql and imports the development_sql.
Just a button that says backup. Would that work? (if they have the budget)
hmmm, possibly. i think i’ll just manage change control myself w/ the backup feature
How do you plan on doing it Mac? I’d love to hear your procedure and how it goes.
