I’ve been keen on giving modx an evaluation run on, for one of my websites, i have my own dedicated server that i share with a lot of people (virtualhosting, but i am root if needed)

now so far i haven’t been able to start the installation, i keep getting 403 errors when i try to load the index.php files (both main as install)

file owners are good, file permissions have been set to 777 temporarely for testing purposes, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference...

Are there any requirements i’m not aware of?

    greetings,
    Rik

ps. i haven’t yet enabled the .htaccess files, though i’ve tried briefly to see if they would make any difference (they don’t)

That sounds like a server permission or mod_security problem to me. Are the files executable? Can you view a simple Hello World script in the same context?

All files have been chmodded 777 recursively, and other html & php in the same site work just fine

mod_security isn’t active on my server, i do run fcgi though to protect all the virtual environments from eachother...
i’m running e107, gallery2, phpbb2 & phpbb3, jamroom and other scripts on the same config.

Is the server running mod_security? Try adding SecFilterEngine Off to your .htaccess file. You could also have a problem within your httpd.conf file (assuming Apache since you mentioned .htaccess before). Do other files named index.php in that same context work properly? Other than that, try re-uploading all the MODx files...

Apart from that 403 error... CHMODding everything 0777 is certainly not a great idea, security-wise...
And even for testing purposes, this can cause more problems than it solves (although I’d expect to see 500 Server Errors rather than 403 Permission Denied errors as a result).

Do you have access to Apache error logs? That might help identify the source of the problem...

I’m getting serious indications that there’s an issue with the tar.gz package of modx that’s available for download right now... I already get an error while unpacking it on my server.

I have to delete the domain in my admin panel and create it again before even the most basic hello world php page will load. Then i can install other php cms platforms without an issue (had a quick test with e107)

As soon as i install modx in the same site, it stops working completely, for all pages on the site (even html?)

i’m trying with the zip archive that’s available for download now, to see if there is any difference...

                greetings,
                Rik

confirmed. the current installer in the tar.gz image that is available for download on this site is broken.

I already get an error about "Garbarge" in the archive wile untarring it.

It could be relative to my host os, i couldn’t say for sure... I’m running this on a Debian Etch system with php 5.2.5

I can install perfectly with the zip file.

Can you try unpacking the tar.gz locally to see if there are issues?

I just tried unpacking it, though i am using Vista here and Debian on my server, also i won’t be able to test if it actually runs... only if it unpacks.

first think i notice is that it untars to .\modx-0961p1
I never noticed the .\ before when unpacking files.... must be a parameter that was given to tar while creating the archive.

I didn’t get any unpacking errors on Vista.
