Answered Failed to update MODx

Hi,

I have got a website running 2.2.8-pl (at least, it says so in the upper left corner). I set it up myself and this is indeed the version I worked with. But when I tried updating to 2.2.10 it said the installation was successful, but the version still says it's 2.2.8-pl. I tried updating some time ago already using the manual etc. I have successfully updated other sites, and can't imagine I did anything wrong. At the moment I blame the hosting, which is shitty. I had to use janitor (CMP) since the hosting doesn't provide proper tools.

Anyway, I think something went wrong with the copying/merging and that the hosting doesn't use merge copying (or whatever the exact term is).

Everything works, although I am getting a 'Access denied' error quite often. So I want to make sure the upgrade is complete and get everything as it should be. I want to delete all files that should be replaced so nothing can go wrong in the merging process, but what files should I keep? Gallery photo's and template related files are obvious, config file... anything else I should keep in mind?

If you use FTP to transfer the files individually, even if it's set to overwrite, it's quite common to end up with missing or corrupted files.

I strongly urge you *not* to delete *any* files. There's no reason to do it and you can end up with a real mess. If there are files that should be deleted, MODX will do it during setup.

Here's how I upgrade: http://bobsguides.com/modx-upgrade-faq.html. Using that method, all necessary files will be overwritten and the transfer will be infinitely faster and more reliable.

Yeah, usually I would use FTP to upload/download zip archives and the hosting portal to zip/unzip. Problem is: they have zipping disabled in the filebrowser.. or it wasn't available in that version yet. Anyway, I used Janitor for zipping/unzipping.

Wouldn't work if I merged the files on my local computer and overwrite everything on the server? Zipping/unzipping using Janitor and moving using the Plesk filebrowser. I believe this is normanwebdesign is saying?

The access denied error led me to this bug: http://tracker.modx.com/issues/9999. I already posted there, but I want to make sure the bug isn't caused by the 'failed' upgrade.

I'm not familiar with Plesk, but isn't there an "unzip," "decompress," or "extract" option in the control panel?

I definitely wouldn't use a host that didn't have that capability.

About the hosting: I am from the Netherlands, so I guess it makes more sense to use Dutch hosting providers. Not that it really matters or anything, I think it's more convenient at times. Also the client already had hosting and all, I would gladly move them to another host but that would mean I have to take care of that. Since I am doing it out of generosity (and I have nothing else to do and like to play with modx), I didn't feel like doing that.

Anyway: I zipped a copy of all the files using Janitor CMP and downloaded it to my local drive. I took modx 2.2.10 and merged it all. Tried to install it on another host (with a copy of the DB) and it worked (apart from some path related errors). So I zipped everything again, uploaded it to the host and unzipped it using Janitor. Flushed cache and permissions and moved the current site to a bak directory. Then I moved the updated files I just unzipped using Janitor and ran the setup. All went smoothly and now when I log into the manager it says 2.2.10 in the upper left corner.
