I already made several websites with Modx Revolution. Mostly I don't make use of 'external files' to code the templates, chunks and other stuff, the code is directly inside the Modx configuration. I only have the initial html/css that I import in Modx and I then use the Modx-tags to configure the whole website (inside Modx). So let's say somebody erases a TV or chunk then I don't have a direct backup of this that I can put back in seconds.
I know the hosting-company is taking a backup they keep for 5 days (so the 6th day the first backup will be overwriten). But that's not the ideal way to fix a problem when they occur.
Because of safety I would like to setup an own backup-system but I don't know how to begin. Sure, I can manually take a copie of the FTP and the mySQL, but I can't do this daily or weekly (and I'm not sure if that would be enough to restore a broken/hacked site?).
Can I use a certain plugin? Or is there another way? And no, I don't want to use Modx Cloud. Is it enough to take a copie of the Modx-site once and then weekly only the mySQL and assets-directory?
I would like to see clear in that area. Thx for advice. A clear guide would be helpful (also for user-management, but that's another discussion ;-) ).

Have you tried using
VersionX? It's not an offsite backup solution but it will save a history version of your files, tvs, chunks, snippets, plugins in your db each time one is edited.
It works pretty well I go through it
here.
