It seems that friendly urls work simply on a 302 redirect - not very seo friendly at all. I have searched the forums and tried to add the R=301 bit to the rewriterule but it then stops working.

Please can someone advise as to how friendly urls can be made to work through a 301 permanent redirect - this really is very important but I cannot see any solution on the forums, although I can see that this has been discussed previously. If I have searched but missed the solution then please point me in the right direction.

URLs are friendly, but they need some improvement SEO-wise, you’re right !

I think what you’re looking for is the SEO strict URLs Plugin, a must have for any SEO optimized MODx website smiley

Friendly URLs do not send 302 redirects. I think you are mistaken, but without further information, can’t offer much advise.

Checked log files and about 98% pages had 302 redirect. htaccess does not specify 301 redirect, therefore they must be 302 redirects without any other instructions having been given by rewriterule.

            Errrr *cough*

Ok, I have also just noticed that I had not got an seo stuff going on the smf forum that I have integrated. Fixed that and will see what happens with the log files. Already had the seo strict urls plugin done, but thanks for the pointer anyway. If the smf stuff turns out to not be the problem then I will post back here.

Friendly URLs do not use redirects at all. The URL Rewriting process is there to examine the URL that your browser has requested, and, behind the scenes, request a document from the server (in MODx’s case, it’s always a request to the "front controller", /index.php). The resulting document is returned to the browser just as if that content physically existed on the requested URL. The browser is not redirected.

It is possible however to create a redirect during document parsing; this can happen in a snippet or a plugin. The "SEO Strict URLs" plugin uses 301 redirects to reduce the possible appearance of duplicate content in your site (because you can arrive at the same document via different URLs). If you’re concerned about the engines, that plugin is worth a look.
