Try turning off compress_css and compress_js in the system settings. Then clear the cache manually (delete all files in core/cache folder), reload pages.
Works?
thanks for the replies - I'm going to try opera now, and I'll ask him about the css compression settings.
I'm guessing you're referring to the site's cache not the browsers Frogabog?
@Tillilab - Yeah I cleared all that stuff... The only difference between our systems is that I'm on windows and he's on mac, but I don't see how that could relate with this??
thanks

Yes, it's the site's cache I'm referring to which is located in the core/cache folder. You can either delete all the files in core/cache, or you can delete the core/cache folder itself. It will rebuild. When you delete, make sure you check that you are clearing files in core/cache and nothing else in the core folder (I mistakenly did this once, which of course broke the site! Nothing a reinstall didn't fix though).
Wouldn't hurt to clear the browser's cache too.
The system settings are easily adjusted and at first glace at your images it appears that you do have access to the System Settings. In the menu, under "System" choose "Settings", then use the search filter and call up "compress" and you should see both compress_css and compress_js settings. Just turn those two off (change to "no").
Clear the cache after turning these settings off. FWIW, clearing the cache manually like this should be a first step when you encounter strange errors in the future. If it fixes the error, you can go on your merry way. It often does just that.

Question 1:
No, not exactly. In the filesystem, you'll find the core folder. Open that, and then you should see the cache folder within. It's the files found within that folder that you want to clear. The cache clear from the manager menu will work in most cases if you have a change that is not showing in the front end, but completely clearing all the files in the cache folder is a more comprehensive clear when you're experiencing manager issues.
Question 2:
Yep, those are the settings. Change them both to No.
Sorry but I don't know where the file system is. I have nothing called 'filesystem' on any of the dropdowns

In the resource tree area, there are three tabs (unless you have modified user permissions), "resources", "elements", and "files". You'll find your filesystem in the files tab.
How about this, try Bob Ray's Clear Cache snippet. It might be a safer way for you to be able to clear the cache and you won't risk deleting files that you don't want to.

Follow the tutorial for installing the snippet and it's use. Then, all you will have to do to fully clear the core/cache files is view the Clear Cache resource (page).
