Sponsor / Donate to Evo Development

I am not sure if this is naive, feasable or even wanted

MODX LLC have a donate and support button on the main website which links to this page

I can only presume that the donations that are made here all go into Revolution and other projects e.g. Cloud etc.

There is (if I am right in saying) no money for Evo development, meaning, the work that the community developers are doing isn't being honoured in any form, other than a "thank you" from one or two users.

Is it not possible on a community basis to get a donate for Evo button for those who use and wish to use Evo for the next couple of years

Where all donations are split between the community developers who contribute to Evo

This could help in getting Evo "up to date" or at least support the forthcoming major changes that need to be made for Evo to work in the near future.

I am not sure what would need to be arranged, but if a MODX LLC member could read this post that could/would be a start.

This is dismaying to say the least.

Thousands of people still use Evo but it seems that no-one is willing to help sponsor the future of Evo.

Taking and not giving back has been the death of many Open Source projects in the past and I can well imagine this phenomenon will prevail in the future.

If the community developers turn and say "we no longer have time to develop Evo further" all users of Evo WILL in the near future suffer and have to get developers in to either re-build in Revo or re-program Evo to work with the latest PHP version etc. which in turn will probably cost a lot of money unless you can program yourself.

I think personaly the problem is that the majority say "won't happen to me", but, it will - when your website is broken because of server issues, don't give MODX or the community developers the fault. [ed. note: iusemodx last edited this post 12 years, 9 months ago.]

I also can't believe, that there is no reaction on your post. I agree with your idea, I'm highly interested in seeing Evo staying alive… and I'm very happy and thankful that there is this small group of developers beeing proactive to push Evo forward. I definitly would donate again, if I would get a feedback of one of them that it would be helpful for Evo. Anybody out there?


ps: I'm looking forward to 1.0.13 and will try to contribute this time with more testing/reporting – thank you evo-team!

I had time to take a quick look at your links dmi3y, looks good, but as you can see by the response to this post, no-one, or should I say, the majority of users don't seem to be interested in sponsoring Evo.

I personally would sponsor the work, but I am not in a position to pay out thousands of dollars to do so, nor am I (speaking honestly) interested in paying for others to use the software when no-one else will help sponsor it.

I see the idealism of "Open Source" in the eyes of the masses as being free is well out of date.

There are, in my opinion, thousands of people still using Evo - when each user would sponsor let's say 5 or 10 dollars, then great, that would give substantial capital to pay for further development - but as it is, no-one seems to be thinking in the long-run here.

I think this is a nice idea to keep Evo evolving and a small amount to donate / pay per site is reasonable.

I think also there is less activity in the Evo side of the forum than there used to be. The more Evo evolvement, I presume the more user activity.

Those new features like modal windows and elements in the tree look excellent - hopefully there is some documentation in English on how to use them to their full potential.

One day hopefully Evo will be frameless and responsive for tablets and mobiles. The Wordpress admin area has recently been made responsive and that is very nice and easy on various devices.

Keep up the great work dmi3y and other Evo contributors.

No, I was hoping that someone from MODX would at least look at this post and maybe help with getting something set-up / sorted.

But as no-one from MODX has replied in any form whatsoever I think it's something they are not interested about.
