    Hello there dear MODX community!

My name is Itamar and I'm examining a couple of CMS options for a new project I'm buliding.
I have something like 40 domains which I need to feed content to, this content shouldn't be just normal pages.
It should probably be read from a couple of database tables and generated as HTML tables.

I will need to keep a design (template) for each of these tables (probably per website) and the content that will be wrapping this (the website)
should also have a unique template as well.

I might want to share a template between websites but that's something else. the idea is that I need the template to be a variable per website.

The type of content which I'm going to generate from the database tables can be as simple as a list of top 10 websites and can be more complex , this is something that will change as I go along with the project.

I would like to be able to keep track of changes in test and production environment through MODX for each of the different domains, of course not just by myself but also with the help of content writers that I would want to provide limited access to (per each domain per say)

Can MODX handle multiple domains and also with a double environment ? (production and test) ?

I am thinking that such platform would only work if built from scratch to keep up with such demands of mine.

But decided it's better to first check out a few built CMSs who might already have some knowledge up their sleeves , maybe they can be a good platform to begin with.

Any opinions would be very much welcome!

    Thanks!

Glad you have stumbled upon MODX. Currently our latest version is MODX Revolution 2.2.10. MODX supports multiple domains out of the box. These are called "contexts" and are managed in your Resource Tree. When you install MODX a "web" context is automatically created for you with an example homepage. Contexts can be used to host subdomains or even used as subdirectories of another context.

Templates are one of the strong points of MODX. In MODX you have assign a Template to a Resource and that defines what the page will output as well as what Template Variables will be available when managing resources with that Template. This gives you the freedom to create your content however you want. You also have Chunks and Snippets. Chunks are just blocks of text (usually HTML) that can have dynamic placeholders and call other Chunks and Snippets. A Snippet is a piece of PHP code and all Snippets can utilize the functions $modx provides.

You mentioned that you need the Template to vary per website, or context. Now this could obviously be done by creating many Templates, but that could lead to duplication. It may make more sense to have one base template that uses conditional tags that load different Chunks, or simply invoke different property sets on the same Chunks based on the current context.

MODX is also great at working with multiple environments. The easiest way to try this yourself would probably be to sign up for a free MODX Cloud lab account where I believe you will have two development clouds to experiment with.

You can create and inject snapshots to move entire, or parts of one MODX site into another. For more advanced users, we've also released a similar tool called Teleport that can create and inject snapshots outside of MODX Cloud.
