Is it possible -- or advisable -- to mix and match https and non-https sites in a MODx installation using different contexts? I'm thinking of having a 1) and open public gateway (non-https) 2) a password-protected area (https), and 3) the manager (https). Should I even consider doing that, or would it be better to create separate instances of MODx, one for protected https pages and one for public non-https pages?

Certainly possible and advisable. Each context can specify the url_scheme setting and you can force requests to each context to the appropriate scheme via virtual host configurations or dynamic routing via a Plugin.
