No, the MAMP/htdocs is part of the file path (/Applications/MAMP/htdocs), not the URL. The web root starts in the htdocs directory. If you’re using the pro version you can have your web root wherever you want it.

    Hi Susan,

Hi Susan, I just purchased the MAMP Pro yesterday, and actually this is the first time I ever attempt to run CMS application from my computer. I have not able to install anything yet, my attempts on installing the Modx and Magento went futile. I have the Modx and Magento folders placed inside the /Applications/MAMP/htdocs, but I can’t see the setup page for both. I found a MAMP installation guide for WP, I think I maybe able to figure how to install Modx after I tried that out.

Two very simply silly things I would like to know, but I can’t find it from MAMP Pro handbook, guess this isn’t anything to do with the software itself.

    1) Do you guys use default ’mysql’ database or create new one in the local server? e.g, modx for Modx, WP for WP

    2) I see I can create new database in phpMYAdmin and SQLiteManager, but in the later, I don’t understand the "version 2 and 3 and the ’choose file’ option, and I don’t know what is the path for. phpMyAdmin doesn’t have these for database creation, so I wonder if they are the ’same’ database thing that one needs to create in order to run PHP site.

No! You cannot use the "default" mysql database!!! That is the mysql metadata database; it stores all the logins, passwords and permissions for all of your other databases! Make your own. The default MAMP user (root, password root) can create databases, so if you just use that all the time (safe enough for local development, deadly if used on a live server) you can install and the MODx installer will create the database you tell it to.

If you are having trouble seeing pages, did you leave the MAMP apache server using port 8080, or did you switch it to use the Web default of port 80? Also it uses a different mysql port on installation. It has a one-click button to use the Web defaults or the MAMP installation defaults. I use the Dashboard widget; it’s quite sufficient to start/stop the servers and change ports and PHP versions.

SQLite is a different database engine from MySQL; it comes embedded in PHP now. I’ve never used it.

LOL, this reminds me I have a friend who didn’t know how to cook, she threw her veggie in the flying wot without adding oil.

I didn’t realize my post was move until I saw your response from RSS, thought it was removed. Many thanks!

I figured that out after I read the setting up WP in MAMP tutorial , however was having problem as the page came out blank. I was also not able to install the Magento due to some error, but I don’t think it has anything to do with the MAMP.

Ok, so that’s the port MAMP uses on installation. I always change that just to make life easier for myself.
