how do I populate a combo box with content in the database

Can someone help point me in the right direction of how I would populate my drop down list menu with content from the database, I have a template variable called url that stores about 200 urls I would like to put them into a combo box.

Are these 200 URLs in template variables (for example 200 documents with a url TV for each document)? Or is this one TV that needs to get it’s data from a database to display as a combo?

Hope my question makes sense.

I have 200 documents that use the url TV so basically 200 records all have the field, I want to pull out all 200 but only the url tv field and put it a combo box.

I was thinking I could use ditto to show all records then create a chunk to just show that one field then somehow put that output in a combo box field?

I think it might be easier and faster to just use the DBAPI: http://modxcms.com/dbapi.html in a snippet that takes the query result and creates the combo box.
