I was reading the Google Gears API blog today and when I got down to the post about SalesForce and got to thinking, it would be supper cool if one day the MODx backend could run in an offline mode for creating and updating pages.

I don’t know how much of the backend could be run offline but it might be worth looking into. It would probably be hard for a site in development, but once it moved to production where only the page data was being updated it might work great.

    Google Gears. Just a thought.

    Note:
I have a guy in Africa who can’t use MODx or any system that doesn’t allow for offline editing because their web connection is basicly slower than dialup and paid for by the minute. But they need to update the site. Currently they just use Dreamweaver. But that looses some of the fun logic things than MODx can do.

Ah ... Africa is indeed tough when it comes to the bush. I’d love to see an offline mode too, though Adobe AIR is probably more akin to what would ultimately work out for us. It’d take a pretty massive amount of development work to say the least.

Well, maybe something could be made of the "email your content" script I’ve made. It could be modified to update different things, such as a template or a snippet, depending on the subject line. Then it could be set up to run as a cron job. So just work locally, and when you’re satisfied with your document/chunk/TV whatever, just email it with the appropriate subject line, and the cron job would periodically run the script to parse the email and load whatever it is into the database.

As way of reference this was an interesting blog.

Seems like Google has lot more in mind than just offline synchronization.

I’m just thinking out loud here but ...

For just updating page content, it ought to be possible to do a manual (or ultimately automatic -- maybe with a hook in QuickEdit) MySQL minidump of the content or some or all documents, edit it locally, and then "MySQL Import" a zipped version of the new page(s)up to the remote.
