PDF files in protected directories generate "page not found" error

I have some PDFs in a directory that needs to be password-protected, since they must not be viewable by the general public and search engines. As soon as I install protection using .htaccess, I get a "page not found" error when accessing the files at their URL. If I remove the password protection, I can view the files. Why is this happening? How can I prevent it? I've tried adding an htaccess file in the PDF directory with "RewriteEngine Off" in it, and that doesn't help.

I'm running Revo 2.2.10, using FURLs.

In your htaccess file, insert the following before the friendly URLs part:
